Liam's career journey continues to evolve

Liam McCaffrey FCIMSPA (Chartered) updates us on his chartered journey and career development

Since gaining chartered status back in January 2023, you’d have forgiven Liam for taking some time to take stock of his achievements, however his hunger to continuously develop his knowledge and hone his skillset has led to further career milestones in achieving Chartered Senior Practitioner and joining our team of chartered assessors.

Based in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, Liam McCaffrey FCIMSPA (Chartered) is a personal trainer and clinical exercise specialist for special populations. A keen gym goer for well over 30 years, Liam has an insatiable passion for exercise and fitness and helping those in his community that really need it, assisting a client base with a broad spectrum of medical conditions.

We caught up with Liam to get his take on the latest strides he has made in his career and get a feel for some of the developments in the sport and physical activity sector.

Becoming chartered has been a revelation for me

Having first spoke to Liam back in 2024 when chartered status was a relatively new achievement for him, we started by discussing how it has impacted his career since.

“It has opened doors for me in terms of work opportunities that I know I wouldn’t have been considered for before.

“One example is that of a patient who has been referred to me privately by the health authority. I know for a fact this was because I was chartered, so that alone got me this work, which in turn leads to other referrals.

Chartered status

Chartered status is a mark of distinction awarded to those who have demonstrated true excellence, innovation and impact within their field.

Chartered professional statuses are issued by CIMSPA for a wide range of occupations in the sector, spanning from coaches to senior managers.

Liam continued to tell us of how he put his success down to an appetite for learning and development.

I’ve no intention of resting on my laurels

“Continuing professional development is essential for me. It’s at the forefront of all of this and keeps me on top of my game.

“Each year, I pinpoint a course that relates to the work I do with my clients. In 2024, I completed the cancer rehab specialist qualification. In 2025, it was a Parkinson’s related course, and this year I have just finished one around multiple sclerosis.

“I’ve no intention of resting on my laurels, I’ve already earmarked a stroke rehab course as my next CPD.”

I really enjoy being able to help candidates realise their potential

As has become apparent with Liam, he relishes a challenge. When the opportunity to be part of the chartered assessment team presented itself, he had little hesitation in grabbing it with both hands.

“I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity. I really enjoy being able to help candidates realise their potential and becoming chartered.

“I’ve not long finished working as an internal quality assurer (IQA), and whilst I enjoyed that, being able to assess prospective chartered candidates remotely works better for me. It gives me the time I need to ensure I give each any every candidate the attention they warrant.”

Having seen both sides of the process has really made me appreciate what I have achieved

Liam went on to tell us how the experience from the side of chartered assessor has changed his mindset and given him a newfound appreciation of what it takes to be chartered.

“Having gone through the chartered assessment process myself only a few years ago, it’s a very enlightening experience for me to be an assessor of chartership candidates.

“I’ve realised what it actually takes to become chartered: the commitment, the impact on people that you need to evidence, the qualifications.

“Having seen both sides of the process has really made me appreciate what I have achieved in becoming a Chartered Senior Practitioner.”

Whilst chartered status has always been synonymous with excellence, innovation and impact at the pinnacle of the sector, it now forms part of professional status with clear and accessible pathways for individuals to grow through.

Assessor professional status

An assessor is an advocate for learners who carries out assessment according to qualifications and programmes being assessed.

They have thorough knowledge of their occupational area and manage their own workload while following the requirements and regulations of internal and external organisations.

They also:

  • support the employability of learners
  • help learners to maintain engagement and motivation
  • organise and maintain documentation
  • assist learners to identify and overcome barriers
  • adapt assessment to meet learner needs
  • provide fair and equal opportunities for everyone.

It brings that credibility and professionalism to our sector

Liam gave us his thoughts on professional status and its role within our sector:

“Professional status acknowledges an individual’s qualifications, their experience and their skill set, which I think is right and proper, but also motivational for anybody that wants to aspire to go on to the next level.

“Having statuses categorised like this absolutely is the right move because it brings that credibility and professionalism to our sector. For those who achieve chartered, it rubber-stamps your status as being at the top of your game.

“Ultimately, it gives people a clear picture of where they are in their career and what they need to do if they aspire to achieve more.”

They really have helped me get a lot of work

Having the tools to showcase his credentials was clearly very important to Liam and offered tangible returns in the form of opportunities to increase his client base.

“From my perspective, it’s been very important for my credentials to be highlighted, to be accessible.

“I use my digital badge and postnominals on various communications such as on social media, my website, email footers, even on things like reports and invoices.

“Using my digital badge and postnominals puts it out there that I’m highly qualified and an expert in my field, which builds trust and professional respect. They really have helped me get a lot of work.”

Liam concluded by offering some words of encouragement to those who are considering applying for chartered status.

“Go for it. It’s definitely a worthwhile investment for your career. As I said earlier, it’s been a revelation for my career.

“It’s the pinnacle. If you feel you’ve got the skills, the qualifications and the experience, and have been providing impact for a continuous amount of time, get applying.”
